Costa Rica is a unique place even among it's Central American neighbors. You will find stunning beauty and wonderful people. You will also encounter the negative side of human nature where there are those that have little or nothing.
Costa Rica is a land of many contrasts. In some areas you have the extremely poor who have nothing and little hope of ever having anything. And in many areas you have the wealthy -many of whom have immigrated or moved part-time from the United States or Europe. Not all from those areas are wealthy of course, but comparatively they have much when compared with the overall local population.
There are however, signs of economic growth in many places with technology starting to take hold and threaten the monopoly that a few families have had on this land for so many years. Many here are trying to imitate in some way the materialism of the West. This has created interesting paradoxes - the very poor in a third-world land -living with large modern shopping malls filled with all sorts of at times useful and mostly useless things to fill homes and gadgets a-plenty to entertain oneself with.
Tourism though is king here. It is the driving force in the economy of the country. No wonder though - there is much to see and explore in this land - still active volcanoes, lakes, Coffee plantations, the Pacific coast, the Caribbean coast, Rainforests, Cloud forests, turtles, birds, and of course the beautiful tropical climate. There is Coffee too! Oh, I already mentioned that! Yeh, the coffee is really good.
If you have the opportunity - it is worth your time and money to see this land they call the "rich coast" or as is better known Costa Rica!
